PayPal and OpenAI are partnering up to bring the digital payments platform to ChatGPT in a first-of-its-kind integration as part of the AI company’s broader efforts on online shopping.

After recently confirming that ChatGPT will bring merchants and various shopping platforms directly into the chatbot, the company has cut out a deal with PayPal to deliver an integrated experience for all.

This integration comes with a dedicated PayPal button that would let users check out or order the products they searched for directly.

PayPal ChatGPT Integration Is Coming Next Year

PayPal shared a new press release which confirms its latest deal with OpenAI, and it is the direct integration of the digital wallet to the ChatGPT platform. The feature is set to arrive next year, according to PayPal, and users will get the opportunity to connect their accounts and have ChatGPT use it for instant checkouts.

According to PayPal, this integration would give users a chance to find tens of millions of merchants, featuring both small businesses and large brands, on ChatGPT and directly purchase from them using the chatbot app.

Users may ask ChatGPT for a specific product they are looking for or get any recommendations on a certain item based on their budget. The chatbot will come up with real product suggestions, and users will be able to purchase it directly there with their PayPal wallets.

Buy Directly on ChatGPT Using PayPal Wallet

This integration is made possible with the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) that PayPal is adopting, and it will deliver a Buy with PayPal button directly on ChatGPT, according to PayPal CEO Alex Chriss.

Users would be presented with the Buy with PayPal button on the products they search on the chatbot platform, but there would be an alternative option of “Pay another way” to use other forms of payment.

ChatGPT Integrations Available Now

ChatGPT is now becoming the all-in-one AI app that users can use, and it has been featuring different kinds of integration that offer significant experiences. Recently, OpenAI introduced the built-in search feature on ChatGPT, which lets users treat the chatbot as a web browser.

The new ad format is a move to monetize a practice that’s already taking place across social media.

Many brands today leverage paid commenters, or otherwise incentivize customers leaving positive reviews. For someone researching a new product, it can be difficult to tell who’s really a happy customer and who may be astroturfing in the comments section.

Adding a way for creators to self-identify as paid promoters could elevate the brand’s reception among that person’s followers while also being more transparent about the nature of the creator-brand relationship. While these are obviously paid endorsements, not organic, creators at least have to risk their own reputations by putting their names behind the given products. If they’re not selective about these recommendations, they can lose their followers’ trust.

Explains Meta, 40% of people now use creator recommendations on Instagram when shopping.

Via Partnership Ads, these recommendations have come in the form of branded content with a paid partnership label attached and even collab posts, which feature both the creator and brand’s handles as the post’s authors.

Testimonials, meanwhile, let creators to write short, under-125-character messages that tie back to the brand’s campaign or the product they’re advertising. To work, creators will send their written endorsement to the brand, and they’ll attach it to the correct ad. (Brands can work with any creator who meets Meta’s eligibility criteria.)

Meta tells TechCrunch that brands and creators will negotiate the deals, including the pricing, directly with one another. Payment also occurs outside of Meta’s app.

The testimonials are then pinned to the top of the comments section on the Instagram post, giving the comments and creators behind them more visibility.

Creators will also be able to track these testimonials and other Partnership Ads under their Creator Settings on the app so they can see how their content is being used and even pull their content, if ever warranted.

DeepSeek looks and feels like any other chatbot, though it leans towards being overly chatty.

Just as with OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini, you open the app (or website) and ask it questions about anything, and it does its best to give you a response.

It gives long answers and will not be drawn on expressing an opinion, however directly it is asked for one.

The chatbot often begins its response by saying the topic is “highly subjective” – whether that is politics (is Donald Trump a good US president?) or soft drinks (which is more tasty, Pepsi or Coke?).

It wouldn’t even commit to saying whether or not it was better than OpenAI’s rival artificial intelligence (AI) assistant ChatGPT, but it did weigh up the pros and cons of both – ChatGPT did exactly the same, and even used very similar language.

DeepSeek says it was trained on data up to October 2023, and while the app seems to have access to current information such as today’s date, the website version does not.

That is not dissimilar to earlier versions of ChatGPT and is probably a similar attempt at safeguarding – to stop the chatbot spewing out misinformation pumped onto the web in real time.

It can be quite fast in its responses, but is currently groaning under the weight of so many people rushing to try it out as it has gone viral.

But there is one area in which it is nothing like its US rival – DeepSeek censors itself when it comes to questions about subjects banned in China.

Sometimes it begins a response, which then disappears from the screen and is replaced by “let’s talk about something else”.

One obviously taboo subject is the 1989 protests in Tiananmen Square which ended with 200 civilians being killed by the military according to the Chinese government – other estimates have ranged from hundreds to many thousands.

But DeepSeek will not answer any questions about it, or even more broadly about what happened in China on that day.

US-developed ChatGPT, by comparison, does not hold back in its answers about Tiananmen Square.

Kayla Blomquist, a researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute and director of the Oxford China Policy Lab, says “relatively speaking” the Chinese government has been “hands off” with the app.

“I would say there’s a shift as we’ve seen an announcement in huge investment from the central government just in the last week – so that is probably going to signal a change moving forward.”

DeepSeek comes with the same caveats as any other chatbots regarding accuracy, and has the look and feel of more established US AI assistants already used by millions.

For many – especially those who do not subscribe to top-tier services – it probably feels pretty much the same.

Imagine a mathematical problem, in which the true answer runs to 32 decimal places but the shortened version runs to eight.

It’s not quite as good – but for most people, that won’t matter.

It may be the case it has managed to cut costs and compute, but we do know that it is built at least in part on the shoulders of the giants: it uses Nvidia chips – albeit older, cheaper versions – and utilises Meta’s open-source Llama architecture, as well as AliBaba’s equivalent Qwen.

“I think this absolutely challenges the idea of monetisation strategies that a lot of leading US AI firms have had,” said Ms Blomquist.

“It is pointing to potential methods of model development that are much less compute and resource-intensive that would potentially signal a shift in paradigm, although that’s unconfirmed and remains to be seen.

“We’ll see what the next couple of months bring.”

The Nfloor’s material is a bioplastic made of roughly 20% bamboo and 80% polylactic acid (PLA). PLA is a common material in 3D printing and fully biodegradable as it is made of corn residue and wood flour from lumber processing. PLA can also be effectively recycled to be used again when needed.

The Nfloor has the dual benefits of a graceful end of life and highly scalable production. When affordable housing is a real challenge across the world, it’s important to be able to provide solutions that speed up construction. Work on the Nfloor is ongoing, including fire retardant improvements.

“The next steps will be to make the manufacturing process faster, more efficient and cost-effective with additional functionality,” said Scott Tomlinson, structural engineer with the University of Maine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center, per TechXplore. “This technology holds a lot of promise for the future of sustainable buildings.”

The researchers had previously put together a demo home using similar 3D printing techniques.
